Recounted is proud to be the official documentary partner tracing the incredible journey of the legendary Highgate Gospel Choir. This is more than a reunion; it's a vital celebration of a foundational group in UK Black Music history.

The Inspiration: Honouring a Legacy

The story began in 2022 when visionary musician Donavan Hepburn—a successful touring drummer for global acts like Gary Barlow and Take That—was inspired by the original Recounted Documentary to celebrate his own musical roots.
Donavan’s heritage is deeply grounded in the powerful sound of the Highgate Gospel Choir.

Donavan’s heritage is deeply grounded in the powerful sound of the Highgate Gospel Choir.

  • Pioneers: The choir was a true cultural trailblazer, performing everywhere from local church concerts to the iconic stage of BBC Pebble Mill in front of Cilla Black.
  • A Defining Sound: They cemented their place in British music history by singing on the original recording of Labi Siffre’s “Something Inside So Strong.”

Inspired by their impact, Donavan embarked on a mission to bring the choir back together, marking 40 years since the release of their last album.
Recounted has been documenting this three-year journey of reunion, rehearsal, and resurgence. This effort represents a significant first: it is the first time a UK Gospel choir of this stature and history has been documented in such depth through documentary filmmaking.

Get ready for the release! In 2026, Recounted, in partnership with the Highgate Gospel Choir, will launch this historic documentary and celebration.
Our goal is simple: to inspire the next generation of Black creatives. By showcasing the remarkable journey of the Highgate Gospel Choir, we aim to prove that their ambition is not new—it is an inherited legacy. They have gone places before, and the next generation can go further still.
